"DJ" has several important functions at a wedding. Amplifying the Ceremony: If your ceremony is under circumstances where you need to amplify the ministers voice for the ceremony, ask your DJ to provide a microphone. If you have a choice between an amplifier provided by the wedding-site staff or by the DJ, the DJ is almost always the better choice. He will usually have more up-to-date equipment and if a problem arises, he will be there to solve it. He can also monitor the volume during the ceremony to assure that everyone hears clearly. The Microphone: There are two types of hand-held microphones commonly used. One is called omni-directional and the other is uni-directional. The uni-directional microphone is designed to pick up sound from one direction only and to eliminate most of the extraneous noise. This type is commonly used by singers. The omni-directional microphone will pick up sound from every direction. So that both the minister and the bride and groom can be heard by your guests, we recommend the omni-directional microphone. Regardless of which type you have, the microphone is usually placed on a stand set between the minister and the wedding couple. Depending upon its quality and type, the microphone may not provide the required amplification when on a stand, and the minister may have to hold the microphone. The DJ may also offer a clip-on microphone that the minister wears during the ceremony. This is usually better than a microphone on a stand for amplifying the minister voice, but is rather ineffective at picking up words from the bride and groom. Regardless of how you choose to amplify the ceremony, be sure to have your minister test the microphone prior to the ceremony. Ceremony Music: See the page titled About Wedding Music° for a description of the ceremony music. At the Reception: A DJ commonly acts as the MC for the wedding reception. He will guide you through all the steps common at receptions, such as bringing in and introducing the wedding party to the quests, the first dance, toasts and comments from family and friends, etc. He will provide and play any type and style of music that you want. Remember this is not a disco so have your DJ keep the volume at a level where the guests can carry on a conversation without shouting at each other. .
